NDDC trains 30 physically challenged persons on agro-based processing in Bayelsa

As part of its initiatives in raising the standards of living of physically challenged persons in the Niger Delta, the Niger Delta Development Commission NDDC, has completed a five days training programme for People Living With Disabilities, PLWDs, in Bayelsa on agro-based processing.

 

Speaking at the training session in Yenagoa, on Monday, the training coordinator, Ms. Akeghayifa Diffa said the objectives of the training was to empower people living with disabilities with practical agro-based skills to earn a living and impact on their immediate environment under the NDDC’s “Empowering People with Disabilities in Agriculture Programme.”

 

According to Diffa, the training areas of specialization include Cassava processing, Palm Oil processing, fruit juice and fish processing, adding that the trainees would be empowered with processing facilities to start their agro-based businesses.

She said: “It is expected that the trainees would be knowledgeable to manange their own agro businesses and at the same they would be provided with starter packs in forms of machines and equipments to start their businesses and they will be encouraged to work in cooperatives.

 

“We want to encourage them to make good use of this opportunity to earn a living and impact on their families and immediate society because opportunities like this doesn’t come all the time,” she stated.

 

Daily Watch reports that a trainee and Chairman of Persons Living With Disabilities, PLWDs, in Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Mr. Arerebo Iden-otu, commended the NDDC for the opportunity given them to learn skills for self reliance.

 

He further called for the expansion of the programme to enable more physically challenged persons across the Niger Delta benefit from such programme as this will enable them provide for their families.
