46, 985 Bayelsans jostle for 2, 500 SEEFOR Jobs

By Edighomor Victor- Yenagoa

The Bayelsa State Employment and Expenditure for Results (SEEFOR) office on Wedesday reported that it has received 46, 985 applications from Bayelsans who want to be employed as minor public workers.

The communication officer of the SEEFOR in Yenagoa, Tarinyo Akono, in a statement said, the 46, 985 applications were recieved from residents of Yenagoa metropolis alone.

He said that selected applicants would be engaged in minor public works such as road maintenance, sweeping and cleaning of road, painting of kerbs, clearing of drains, planting of trees/flowers, vegetation, among others.

Beyond the engagement that has a contractual term of 12 months with N20, 000 monthly stipends, he said the SEEFOR will go further to enroll the beneficiaries into money management and entrepreneurial skill training.

He said the aim of the training is to make the beneficiaries become life-time entrepreneurs at the termination of their 12 months engagement with the SEEFOR project.

“The intention of the partnering agencies is not to continue to make you life-time beneficiaries but to make you entrepreneurs that will soon become renowned employers of labour.”

He further explained that the selection of beneficiaries were done on the basis of their special needs which include their household size, dependents on the beneficiaries.

He said: “out of the N20, 000 monthly stipend, beneficiaries would be able to withdraw only N15, 000 each month in a bid to help them cultivate good savings culture.

“At the termination of their employment they would have saved N60, 000 that they can invest in the skill they learnt at the money management and entrepreneurial skill training program.

“Our intention is to engage 6, 000 persons for the project this year. Out of that figure, 2, 500 slots are available for residents of Yenagoa metropolis and we have received 46, 985 applications for that already.

“While the remaining 3, 500 opportunities are open for applicants residing in communities and villages outside Yenagoa metropolis. This category is not thrown open for applicants. It is done based on nomination by the leadership of communities and this is done in a transparent manner.”

Others including the leader of the house, Martin’s Amehule and Blessing Pepple of Bonny Constituency maintained that there was no need to create a new institution for the enforcement of the law, suggested that the ministry of transport should be given the authority to oversee the enforcement team.

In the divergent view, Chief Evans peppe and Sam oge of Emuoha Constituency said that the enforcement of the law should be under the perview of the ministry of urban development especially since the law is meant to bring sanity across the 23LGA of the state.
